ATELIER JULIA TRÖNDLE

What’s to come — About AJT
It is my mission to design women’s knitwear that is modern, minimal, often colorful, created with an artistic eye and a practical approach to how things can be done easiest within the craft of knitting, carefully considering different skill levels of knitters. My design process often involves “out of the box” thinking and is influenced by my background in Fine Arts. You will find a mix of neutral-colored basics as well as vibrant, colorful, minimalist garments that are made to stand out and that will make you feel safe, warm and comfortable.

ATELIER JULIA TRÖNDLE operates out of a small apartment located in Vienna, Austria.

The Story Behind AJT
So, you wanna know how I started knitting? I grew up in the 90s in Austria where at the time, it was common for all the girls to learn how to knit in elementary school. Ironically, I wasn’t very good at knitting as a child, I even grew to hate it at times. But I’ve always liked creating things with my hands, which led me to studying Fine Arts at Bauhaus-University in Weimar, Germany later in life. Abstract drawing was my thing and even though I was quite successful with my artworks, something always felt off. After I graduated, I stopped making art almost entirely, lacking the pressure of deadlines or exhibitions organized by the University. It was then, during one of the darkest times of my life while suffering from a major depressive episode, that I decided to knit my very first sweater. As all first sweaters, it turned out horribly (think negative ease on a cropped garment) but the fact that I sat down to make this sweater a reality filled me with a sense of pride I hardly ever felt before — not to mention the immense benefits knitting had on my mental health. After that, I just kept knitting sweaters, some from patterns, others without a pattern, and I simultaneously started following knitwear designers from around the world. And in Spring 2023, as I found myself with a solid day-job and recently moved into a beautiful studio apartment of my own, I decided to make the dream of becoming a knitwear designer a reality. I turned my apartment into a knitting studio and have been immensely busy designing, planning, learning (so much learning!), knitting and thinking ever since.

I truly wish that you will enjoy knitting my garments as much as I enjoy making them.
